About this requirement
Online forms frequently ask for a scanned or photographed signature at a wide, short size such as 140 x 60 pixels, often with a very small maximum size around 20 KB. The signature must remain readable as dark strokes on a light background after heavy compression.
The best results come from signing on plain white paper with a dark pen, photographing or scanning in even light, then cropping tightly around the signature with a small clean margin. Faint pencil, lined paper, and busy desk backgrounds are common reasons these uploads fail.
Because the target is tiny, contrast matters more than color accuracy. Darken light strokes if needed before processing, choose JPG when the portal allows it for size, and verify that every letter or flourish is still visible in the downloaded file.
Detailed guidance
Use unlined white paper and a pen that writes dark, continuous lines. Place the paper flat, photograph from directly above, and avoid shadows from your hand or phone. A flatbed scan is excellent when available; a careful phone photo works if the lighting is even.
Signature boxes are usually much wider than they are tall. Crop so the full signature sits horizontally in the frame without large empty regions on one side. Do not rotate the signature diagonally to “fit” — keep it level and readable.
At 140 x 60 pixels, JPG compression can usually reach 20 KB while keeping strokes visible. If the file is still oversized, confirm dimensions first, then lower quality slightly. PNG can help for very sharp black-and-white line art, but many portals still expect JPG and a hard KB cap.
Zoom to 100% and make sure loops, dots, and end strokes are not broken into noise. If compression turns the signature into speckles, improve contrast on the source or reduce empty background before compressing again.
Only if the portal accepts it and the strokes look natural and dark. Many forms prefer a scanned handwritten signature. When in doubt, sign on paper and photograph it.
Change the output format to PNG in the editor if available for your workflow, or prepare the crop first and export in the format the form lists. Always prioritize the portal’s stated file type.
Large source dimensions or lots of background noise inflate file size. Crop tightly to the ink, use the exact pixel size, and apply moderate JPG compression rather than uploading a full-page photo.
